Southern Illinois University Carbondale is located in the heart of Southern Illinois. St. Louis, located only 107 miles northwest, and Chicago, located 333 miles to the north, provide additional cultural access to local and regional activities to students and faculty. Many prospective students consider the quality of the landscape to be among their priority considerations. Located just south of the southern Illinois coal fields and at the edge of the Illinois Ozarks, the area is predominantly rural in character. Much of the land between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers is covered by the Shawnee National Forest and is rich in scenic beauty, wildlife and recreational possibilities.

From the North: Take Interstate 57 South to Marion, IL, Exit 54. Take the Carbondale SIU exit, Illinois 13 West. Follow Illinois 13 through Carterville, and past Crab Orchard Lake, approximately 15 miles. Once in Carbondale, continue on Illinois 13, about one mile, and turn South on US 51. Look for SIU Campus on West side of the road.

From the Southwest: Take Interstate 57 North to Marion, IL, Exit 54. Take the Carbondale SIU exit, Illinois 13 West. From the Southeast: Interstate 24 will merge with Interstate 57. Continue on Interstate 57 North to Marion, IL, Exit 54. Take the Carbondale SIU exit, Illinois 13 West. Follow Illinois 13 through Carterville, and past Crab Orchard Lake, approximately 15 miles. Once in Carbondale, Continue on Illinois 13, about one mile and turn South on US 51. Look for SIU Campus on West side of the road.
