Paul Fuchs
Video and Installation Artist

Lecture to Time-Based Art Class, April 18
Lecture to Foundation Studio A, April 18, 5:00 p.m.

Paul Fuchs received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999.  He and his group, Jibangus, have shown in prominent venues such as the Madison Art Center (now the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art) multiple times, as well as the Soap Factory (Minneapolis), the Wendy Cooper Gallery (Chicago), the Stray Show (Chicago), Western Exhibitions (Chicago),  the Bower (San Antonio), and the SLOP collective.  Jibangus was created after winning a $125,000 grant to produce a half-hour TV pilot in Los Angeles.  While the pilot was not picked up, it did lead to their eventual production of a feature-length movie, which has been screened in several major cities across the country.  It is also shown in art galleries along with props and installations from the movie.  Jibangus has been reviewed in Der Spiegel and U.S. News and World Report.  Paul continues to regularly show his own work as well.

Paul and Jibangus have an extremely unique vision for the role of video in the art world today, a mongrelization of feature film and gallery shorts that is something like a mix between Coven, Red Dwarf, and Matthew Barney.  It is an intentionally low-budget funny-as-all-get-out shock-horror metaphoric whirl.  It combines the critical vision of the art world with the accessibility of real movies.
