Elina Gertsman, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Art History
Elina Gertsman received her PhD in 2004 from Boston University. She specializes in medieval art, primarily High and Late Middle Ages. Dr. Gertsman's research interests include issues of viewership in the Middle Ages; medieval performance/ performativity; the body and sexuality in Gothic art; late medieval macabre; perceptions of unveiling; and representations of emotion. Her book, The Dance of Death in the Middle Ages: Image, Text, Performance, is under contract with Brepols; and her edited volume, Visualizing Medieval Performance: Perspectives, Histories, Contexts, was published by Ashgate in 2008. Dr. Gertsman has published articles in Gesta, Studies in Iconography, Religion and the Arts, Source, Essays in Medieval Studies, Mediaevalia, and a number of other journals. At SIU she teaches medieval (western European and Islamic) and early modern art.
