Thankfully I was brought up by a mother who cherished books above all other material objects. She was resolute in her endeavour to imbue her children with this self same passion. Picture books were especially important and every Christmas Day we would receive the Rupert Bear album already well thumbed and read cover to cover by my mother on Christmas Eve. Her diligence paid off and to this day I have an abiding fascination with the subtleties of visual storytelling and the lands to which it can transport me.
Within the realms of painting I strive to recreate these subtleties through my own stories; stories that are a mixture of fact and fiction, a synthesis of memory and place. The images hint at a storyline but tantalisingly only give a glimpse of a fragment, leaving the onlooker completing the narrative. In this way the story doubles, trebles and continues to multiply in meaning, becoming richer with each retelling.
