Philosophy
The philosophy of the Program in Art Education at Southern embodies
a strong studio competency, theoretical and practical knowledge
bases, and commitments to inclusive schooling and social reconstruction.
Art education students receive a thorough grounding in aesthetics
and the epistemology of art teaching throughout history. This
is in part achieved through the personal location of each student's
philosophical premises and the impact that different theories
and philosophies have brought to bear on their development.
Our program has a strong commitment to aesthetic learning and
its integration into all art learning experiences for young
people and university students alike. Postmodern pedagogy and
theory receive strong treatment in our course offerings.
History
The Art Education Program at Southern dates back to the beginnings
of the University during the Reconstruction Period after the
Civil War. Instruction in drawing for classroom teachers was
the earliest form of art training offered at this institution.
The School of Art came into its own in the early part of the
20th century with diverse course offerings available in the
1920's. Art teacher training has been part of this mission for
most of this century. The Program in Art Education has produced
local, regional, and international artists, educators, and scholars.
This program produces many of the art teachers that serve southern
Illinois, are represented throughout the rest of the state and
nation.
