SIUC Glass Department Educational Philosophies

MFA Program

The graduate program in glass puts a high emphasis on the development of personal artistic ability and identity. Graduate students explore individual research through interaction with faculty, other students, and visiting artists, both within the glass department, and also throughout the larger art department and community.

The MFA program in glass is a diverse and rich experience. Students past and present have come from all around the world, and all around the US.

BFA Program

The undergraduate program at SIUC places emphasis on developing artistic and professional skills. Degree seeking candidates follow course work that will lead them through an introduction to flat-glass, slumping and fusing techniques, traditional blown glass techniques, to thinking about glass as a sculptural media and substance both in form and content. Students are encouraged to persue whichever avenue of glass-making they feel most compelled to study and master. The goal of this program is to ensure that undergraduate students are prepared for a variety of career opportunities, from production work, to further education, and all points in-between.
