Since retiring from the School of Art and Design in January of 1997, George has continued to live in the area with his wife Renee who, until January 1, 2008, taught art at John A. Logan College.  She too has retired.

Along with his research interests, George continues to bind books and fabricate art boxes.  He also does minor book repair.

George continues his research into federally funded art of the thirties.  He recently published an article in the book, “Art for the People” written and edited by Heather Becker.  He curated a show of federally produced art for the SIUC Museum.  He has been invited to give lectures and talks including the Art Institute of Chicago for the National New Deal Preservation Association Conference entitled “the New Deal: Past, Present and Future,” a lecture at Western Illinois University Art Gallery in conjunction with a federal art exhibition and, most recently, at SIUC.  The title of his presentation was “The Individuals Who Helped Create Federal Funding for the Arts during the 1930’s.”
