Larry Briggs graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BFA in Advertising Design. He moved to Dallas, Texas, to work in design studios and advertising agencies before being drafted into the Army where he served for two years. He has worked in the corporate world of advertising for over 27 years, most of which was in Dallas, before coming to Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1985 as an Associate Professor in Design.
Larry's experience includes that of a designer, art director, creative group head and Creative Director in advertising agencies. His work covers all facets of conceptual design from print ads, packaging, outdoor, promotional, point-of-sale, multi-media, to electronic media. He has done national and international advertising campaigns for big name accounts like: American, Southwest, Braniff and Frontier Airlines, Frito Lay, Zales, Texas Instruments, Dole Bananas, McDonald’s, Haggar Slacks, Greyhound, Lone Star, Pearl, Bohemia and Tecate Beers, Cessna Aircraft, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Phillips 66, Quaker, Jack Daniels, Daisy-Heddon, Cracker Jack, Halliburton, Max Factor, Dr Pepper and Campbell-Taggart Bakeries. His work has appeared in Fortune, Time, Newsweek, Life, trade publications, graphics annuals, Advertising Age, CA Annuals and Ad Week. Briggs has won awards in the top design shows in Dallas, New York, Chicago, LA and the Addy’s.
He is married and has three children, loves to play golf, ride his motorcycle, play billiards for money and float down the Ohio River in his boat. As Skip is fond of saying, “I love my job because I get to give back to a career that was very, very good to me. The highlight of my day is working with inspired students who want to learn how to do what I did, and it’s my job to prepare them for everything they will encounter and experience out there in the corporate world of design when they leave SIUC.”
